Xylitol is one of the natural ingredients found in Lacer Natur® toothpaste and mouthwash. It is a natural sweetener found in some cereals and fruits such as corn and strawberries as well as in birch sap, which is why it is popularly known as birch sugar. Its properties, however, are very different from those of sugar. Let’s take a look…

Properties of xylitol

As an active ingredient for oral hygiene, xylitol provides numerous benefits. For example, it protects against cavities and prevents the formation of dental plaque* and gum disease. It also makes us secrete saliva, which helps to regulate the pH of the mouth, controlling acids and promoting the protection of tooth enamel. Because Xylitol protects your teeth against dental plaque, it helps prevent the formation of tartar.

What is xylitol used for?

In addition to its presence in oral hygiene products, xylitol is also used as a healthy substitute for sugar. But, as we have seen, unlike sugar it is not harmful to tooth health. In fact, quite the opposite. It also has fewer calories, which can help us to improve our diet and control our weight.

Xylitol does not require insulin in order for our body to metabolise it, so it is used as a sugar substitute in specific products for diabetics. It is also used in confectionery and various types of sweets such as chocolate or candy, including sugar-free chewing gum.

In fact, the consumption of chewing gum containing xylitol can help us to protect our teeth from cavities at times when brushing is impossible. It is not about using chewing gum with xylitol as an alternative to brushing, but it can be useful when we do not have a toothbrush and toothpaste available.

Chewing gum with xylitol after a meal when it is impossible for us to brush helps us because xylitol slows the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay. In addition, it makes us generate saliva, which maintains low acidity, making demineralisation of the enamel more difficult. And finally, when chewing, food debris that may have been left between the teeth is removed.

Where does the xylitol we use at Lacer Natur® come from?

The xylitol in Lacer Natur® toothpaste and mouthwash is extracted from 100% natural and sustainable sources such as corn from environmentally friendly cultivars. Its natural sweetness contributes to the pleasant taste of Lacer Natur® mouthwash and toothpaste.
